Experimental woodcut printmaking workshops
Talkingleaves Studio
Acme, PA 15610
Instructed by Thomas Brown
Price: per person $180
Maximum 1-4 participants
In these hands-on workshops, participants will create original woodcut prints while learning the fundamentals of relief printmaking. We’ll cover the full process—from developing an image and transferring it to the woodblock, to carving, inking, and printing finished prints.
Participants will print using the presses at Talkingleaves Studio, including a 40×70 Takach press and a 20×40 Charles Brand etching press. These are the same presses used in my own printmaking practice and allow students to experience the traditional process of printing relief blocks on professional equipment.
Woodcut is one of the oldest printmaking techniques, with a long history across many cultures. In this workshop, we’ll focus on the physical process of carving and printing, while exploring how strong shapes, lines, and contrast work together to build an image.
Participants are encouraged to bring source images, sketches, or ideas to work from. Nature, landscape, animals, and simple figurative imagery tend to work well for woodcut, but participants are welcome to explore any subject they’re interested in.
During the workshops we’ll cover:
Choosing an image that works well for woodcut
Transferring drawings onto the woodblock
Basic carving techniques and tool handling
Inking the block and preparing paper
Print registration
Printing on the Takach or Charles Brand presses
these workshops will be spilt in to 2 sessions, 1st the image and wood carving, and 2nd the printing
By the end of the workshops, participants will have a finished woodcut print and a solid understanding of the relief printmaking process.
